All about Mike Murphy

  Whipmaker Mike Murphy

My whip making style is most influenced by Thomas Cockburn-Cambell who taught me whip cracking and whip making skills from when I was 9 years old to middle teens. His knowledge was very extensive, not only on whip making but in the business of all things of the Australian outback.

Having been a stockman, station owner (cattle rancher) his biography makes great reading. You may be able to find a copy, it's called "Land of Lots of Time" by Fremantle Arts Press.

What old Tom impressed on me most was how to make a good falling whip and that knowledge lies at the core of the whips I make today.

Since 1990 I have been a regular winner of Australian Braiding competitions including the Perth, Melbourne and Sydney Royal Shows. These competitions are invaluable to me as they give me the impetus to continually master difficult whip making techniques.

I have been a regular competitor at the RM Williams AWPA Australian National Whipcracking Championships representing my home state of Western Australia (winner 2005-06 City Muster WA State Mens Champion). 2005-06 I won the RM Williams AWPA Australian National Whipcracking Champion in the Open 35-50yrs Division.
